Keeping Your Home Cool and Safe Through a Heatwave

It’s the third afternoon in a row that the heat hasn’t broken. The fan has been running since morning, but sometime after lunch you notice it’s just moving warm air from one side of the room to the other. You haven’t done much all day, and still there’s a heaviness on you that a rest doesn’t quite lift.

I want to talk about heat this week — and I want to do it before the worst of a heatwave, not during — because heat is the rare danger that doesn’t feel like one. It doesn’t sting or ache. It wears you down slowly and quietly, until an ordinary hot afternoon has done more than make you tired.

So let me say the plain thing first, the thing that’s easy to resist hearing. Older bodies handle heat differently than younger ones. That isn’t an insult, and it isn’t a weakness you failed to prevent. It’s physiology, and knowing it is what keeps you safe.

Why Heat Hits Older Bodies Harder

With age, the body simply gets less efficient at cooling itself. The National Institute on Aging puts it plainly: an older body doesn’t adjust as well to sudden temperature changes, sweats less effectively, and loses some of the quick responses that once kept it cool without a thought. On top of that, common medications — water pills, some heart and blood pressure medicines, sedatives — can make it even harder for the body to shed heat.

This is not a small effect. Looking at years of data, the CDC found that adults 65 and older account for roughly 40% of heat-related deaths, and have the highest death rate of any age group. I don’t share that number to frighten you. I share it because it’s the exact number that turns “I’ll be fine, it’s just a warm week” into “this is worth taking seriously” — and taking it seriously is almost entirely doable from your own home.

That’s the part I find genuinely reassuring. The front line against heat isn’t a hospital. It’s your living room. And most of what protects you there is simple.

Get Ahead of It: A Ten-Minute Prep the Day Before

Heat is far easier to manage if the plan is already made when it arrives. So on the evening before a hot spell — while it’s still cool enough to think clearly — walk through this once. It takes about ten minutes and it does most of the work for the days that follow.

• Choose your cool room now. Every home has one spot that stays coolest — usually the lowest floor, the shadiest side, the room the afternoon sun never reaches. Decide which one is your base for the hot hours, before you’re too worn down to move furniture or thoughts around.

• Line up an air-conditioned fallback. If the house has no AC or loses it, know exactly where you’ll go — a specific library, a mall, a relative’s place — and how you’ll get there. Deciding that at two in the afternoon in the full heat is far harder than deciding it now.

• Stock two or three no-cook meals. Cold plates, sandwiches, fruit, yogurt — anything that keeps the oven off for a few days.

• Fill water bottles and place one wherever you sit. By the armchair, by the bed, by the kitchen chair. Water you can see is water you’ll actually drink.

• Make a couple of cool packs. Dampen two washcloths, seal them in a bag, and put them in the freezer. A cold cloth on the neck is one of the fastest ways to bring your temperature down, and it’s nice to have it ready.

• Charge your phone and keep it near you. Heat can bring power cuts, and a charged phone is how you reach someone if one hits.

• Sort your medicines. Ask your doctor or pharmacist whether any of yours make heat harder to handle — and if any need refrigeration, keep a small cooler and some ice on hand in case the power drops.

None of that is dramatic. It’s ten minutes the evening before that spares you a hundred small decisions in the heat.

Making the House a Cooler Place

You don’t need central air to make a real difference. Most of this is about working with the day instead of against it.

• Close the house up during the day, open it at night. Shades, blinds, and curtains drawn against the sun in the hot hours; windows opened in the cool of the evening and early morning to flush the heat out. It feels backwards to close curtains on a bright day, but sunlight through glass is one of the main things heating your rooms.

• Make a cross-breeze at night. When the outside air finally cools, open windows on opposite sides of the home so the air moves through and carries the day’s heat out with it. Close it all back up before the morning sun climbs.

• Live on the coolest floor, and shut the doors on empty sunny rooms. Heat rises, and there’s no reason to cool a spare bedroom the sun has been baking all day. Close it off and keep to your cool base.

• Don’t cook with the stove or oven. The CDC lists this specifically — a hot oven heats you and the whole room. Heatwave days are for cold meals, whatever needs no burner.

• Unplug what runs hot. Even a cluster of electronics and lamps left on adds warmth to a small room. On the worst days, switch off what you’re not using.

• If your home gets dangerously hot, leave it for a few hours. This is not giving up. A public library, a shopping mall, a movie theater, a senior center — anywhere with air conditioning — is a legitimate cooling strategy for the hottest part of the day. In the US you can dial 2-1-1 to find a local cooling center.

None of that requires spending money or admitting defeat. It’s just knowing which levers exist.

How to Cool Your Body Down Fast

When the heat has already gotten to you, the quickest way back is to cool the blood close to the skin. A few specifics that work better than most people expect:

• Go for the pulse points. The wrists, the neck, the temples, and the ankles are where blood runs nearest the surface. A cool, damp cloth on those spots — refreshed every few minutes — pulls heat out faster than fanning your whole body.

• Cool, not ice-cold. This is the counterintuitive part. Water that’s freezing can make the surface blood vessels clamp shut and actually trap heat inside. Cool and steady beats a shock of cold every time.

• Use a basin for your feet. A cool shower or bath is best, but if that’s difficult, a basin of cool water for your feet does far more than it sounds like — a lot of heat leaves the body through them.

• Cool inside and out at once. Sip cool water while you do any of this. You’re bringing the temperature down from both directions.

The Fan Trap

This one surprised me, and it’s important enough that I moved it out on its own.

A fan feels like the obvious answer to heat. And below a certain temperature, it is — moving air helps sweat evaporate and cools you down. But past that line, a fan stops helping and starts hurting. The CDC is specific: once the air in the room climbs above about 90°F (32°C), a fan can actually raise your body temperature, because all it’s doing then is blowing hot air across you, like an oven’s convection setting.

So the rule is simple, and worth remembering exactly: a fan is a helper in warm weather, not a rescue in a real heatwave. When it’s truly hot indoors, a fan is not enough on its own. That’s the moment for cool water on the skin, a cooler room, or a trip somewhere air-conditioned — not just more fan. One trick does stretch a fan further, though: set a bowl of ice in front of it, and the air it pushes actually comes off cooler.

What to Watch For — In Yourself

Heat illness moves in two stages, and the difference between them is the difference between “rest and cool down” and “call for help right now.” Learning the two is one of the most useful things you can do before a hot spell.

Heat exhaustion is the warning stage. The signs: heavy sweating, cool or clammy skin, headache, dizziness or feeling faint, nausea, weakness, and a fast, weak pulse. This is your body telling you clearly: stop, get to a cool place, sip water, put a cool cloth on your skin, lie down. Most heat exhaustion turns around within an hour if you respond to it.

Heat stroke is the emergency. The tell-tale shift is in the mind and the skin: confusion, slurred speech, or acting strangely; skin that’s hot and may be dry, or a person who was sweating heavily and then stops; a very high temperature; sometimes fainting. This is a 911 call, immediately — heat stroke can cause lasting harm or death if it waits. While help comes, move the person somewhere cool, get cool water or cloths onto the skin, especially the neck, armpits, and groin.

Write those down, or better, tell someone in your house. The person having heat stroke is often the last to realize it — confusion is a symptom, which means the one overheating can’t always be counted on to notice. Which brings me to the last, and maybe most important, piece.

The Part That Takes the Most Pride to Do

If you live alone, arrange for someone to check on you during a heatwave. And if you know someone older who lives alone, be that someone for them.

I know how that lands, because I’ve watched my own parents bristle at it. A daily call during a hot spell can feel like being treated as fragile, as a person things happen to. I understand the reflex completely. But the CDC’s guidance for heat is explicit about checking on older adults who live alone at least twice a day during dangerous heat — because heat illness clouds judgment early, and a second pair of eyes catches what an overheated brain might miss.

So here’s the reframe I’d offer. Accepting a check-in call is not conceding anything about who you are. It’s the same thing as closing the curtains and skipping the oven: a small, smart move that keeps you independent longer, not proof that your independence is slipping. The most self-reliant thing you can do in a heatwave is make sure one person would notice if you went quiet.

Make it easy on both of you: agree on a set time — say, a morning call and an evening one — so no one has to wonder or feel like a bother. A two-line text at nine and at six is enough. It’s not surveillance. It’s a tripwire, and tripwires are what let confident people take on hot weather without gambling.

Close the curtains. Skip the oven. Keep the water and the cool cloth close. And let one person have your back.
