How To Continue Reading Even If Your Eyes Are Tired

I remember how much my mother used to read. She loved John Grisham — if I needed a present for her, you could not go wrong with one of his books. I think the pleasure I take in books came from watching her.

She reads less now, and it happened so gradually that there is no moment to point to. No announcement, no decision, nothing that would have prompted a question from anyone.

It took me a long time to understand that nothing had changed about how much she wanted to read. What had changed was what reading asked of her eyes.

Perhaps you know the other side of it.

The book has been on the side table for three weeks. You sit down with it after dinner, in the good chair, under the lamp you bought specifically for this. Twenty minutes in, the line you are on slides into the line above it. You go back to the top of the paragraph and start again, and somewhere in the middle your eyes are still pointed at the page but nothing is arriving.

So you put it down. And the sentence you say to yourself, if you say anything at all, is that you must be tired tonight.

You are probably not tired. Your eyes are doing exactly what eyes do after sixty, the book is fine, and your attention is fine. The thing that needs to change is none of those. It is the assumption that the only way into that book is the printed page.

Notice what is actually happening at minute twenty

Reading is physical work, and the equipment changes.

The lens inside the eye stiffens with age and stops shifting focus for close work. It is called presbyopia, and it is not a condition some people get. The National Eye Institute describes it as a normal part of aging that essentially everyone runs into from around forty onward. By the fifties it is universal. Reading glasses correct the focus, but they do not remove the effort.

Dry eye sits on top of it, and it climbs decade by decade after forty. People also blink less when they concentrate on a page, which is exactly the wrong thing for an eye that is already short on tears.

None of that is an emergency. It is just an explanation for the specific way reading fails now: fine for fifteen minutes, then the words start to slide. That is not concentration going. That is a focusing muscle finishing its shift.

Worth saying plainly, since it is the more common problem: if the words swim on every page, at every hour, the first stop is an eye exam, not an app. The prescription may simply be old. I wrote another post a month ago about the glasses themselves being part of the problem, and it is the right place to start if you have not had your eyes checked in a couple of years.

Everything below is for after that. The eyes are as corrected as they are going to get, and reading is still work.

Settle the question of whether listening counts

Most people who hesitate are not hesitating about technology. They are hesitating about something older than that, which is the feeling that listening to a book is a softer version of reading it. A shortcut. Not quite the real thing.

The research does not support that feeling.

A study published in SAGE Open in 2016 tested exactly that. Ninety-one people were randomly assigned to take in the same material — the preface and a chapter of a nonfiction book — in one of three ways: as an audiobook, as text on a screen, or both at once. Everyone then sat the same written comprehension test, first immediately and again two weeks later. No statistically significant difference showed up between the three groups, at either point.

Daniel Willingham, a cognitive psychologist who has spent years on this question, puts the reason for it simply enough. For an adult who reads fluently, decoding print is automatic — it stopped requiring effort decades ago. What is left is the comprehension machinery, and that machinery is the same whether the words arrive through the eyes or the ears. Your brain builds the same model of what is happening either way.

There is one genuine caveat, and it is worth keeping. Listening tends to lose ground when it is done alongside something demanding. The reason is not that listening is weaker; it is that attention is being split. That has nothing to do with age and everything to do with doing two things at once.

So: a novel finished on audio is a novel you finished. This is not a consolation prize, and there is no version of this where you took the easy way.

Start with the card already in your wallet

Before spending anything, check what you are already entitled to.

Public libraries lend audiobooks, thousands of them, and the borrowing is done from a chair. The app most libraries use is called Libby. It is free, it is made by OverDrive — the company that has supplied library ebooks for years — and everything inside it is free to borrow with a valid card. No purchases, no fees, nothing to cancel later. You install it, tell it which library you belong to, type in your card number, and the catalog opens.

Popular titles have waiting lists, the same as the paper copies do. The trick most people work out eventually: place holds on five or six books at once rather than waiting for one. They arrive staggered over the following weeks, and something is almost always ready.

Many libraries also offer hoopla — not every system carries it, but where it exists it works differently in a way that matters here: no waiting lists at all. Everything shown is available immediately, with a limit on how many things you can borrow each month. When Libby says twelve weeks, hoopla is the one to check.

If you do not have a library card, or have not used one since your children were small, most library systems now let you apply online in about ten minutes. The card is free.

Try the shelf with no waiting list at all

LibriVox is also worth knowing about for a different reason. Volunteers around the world record books that have passed into the public domain, and the whole catalog — more than twenty-one thousand completed recordings — is free to anyone, with no card, no account, no holds and no limits.

The honest caveat: the readers are volunteers, so the quality varies from excellent to amateur. Listen to two minutes before committing to twelve hours.

What it is genuinely good for is the classics. Everything published long enough ago is in there, which makes it the cheapest possible way to find out whether listening works for you at all. Pick a book you already know and like. You will be able to tell within a chapter whether your attention holds.

Check whether you qualify for the service that costs nothing

This one is specific to the United States, and a great many people who are eligible have never heard of it.

The Library of Congress runs the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled, and it is not a discount program. It is free — the books, the postage, and a specially designed player mailed to your home, with large tactile buttons and no monthly cost of any kind.

Eligibility is wider than the name suggests. It covers low vision that cannot be corrected with glasses, medication or surgery, including macular degeneration and other age-related conditions, as well as physical conditions that make holding a book or turning pages difficult. It does not require total blindness.

Applying takes a signature from a doctor or another certifying professional, and a phone call to 1-888-657-7323 to find your state’s library. The books can be navigated by chapter, section or page and played at adjustable speed. If your vision has moved past the point where better lighting and stronger glasses help, start here rather than with anything you would pay for.

Skip the apps entirely if you would rather

Nothing above requires a smartphone, and one option in particular deserves more attention than it gets.

A Playaway is a single audiobook on a small preloaded player, roughly the size of a deck of cards. It takes one battery, it has large buttons and a readable display, and it needs no internet connection and no other device. You plug in headphones and press play. You cannot buy it as an individual, but libraries in the United States and a number of other countries lend them exactly like books, and you return them the same way. Worth asking at the desk whether yours does.

Audiobooks on CD are still stocked in most library systems too, which is the practical answer if there is already a CD player in the kitchen and the whole question is how to listen while making dinner.

Neither of these requires you to learn anything, create an account, or ask a grandchild for help.

Wait before you subscribe to anything

Paid services are perfectly reasonable, and there is one rule that will save you money: do not buy a subscription in the same week you discover audiobooks. Enthusiasm is high, the free sources have not been tested yet, and a monthly charge is far easier to start than to stop.

If the library route genuinely fails you — the waiting lists are long, the specific books you want are not there — then the paid options are straightforward. In the United States, Audible currently runs about nine dollars a month for one book a month, or roughly fifteen for a monthly credit plus a catalog of titles included with the membership, with an annual version that works out cheaper; there is a separate store for each country, and prices differ between them. Audiobooks bought with a credit stay yours even if you cancel later. Spotify includes a monthly allowance of audiobook listening on some of its Premium plans in some countries, which is worth checking if you already pay for it — prices and terms on all of these change, so look at the current page rather than taking my word for the number.

And whatever you sign up for, write the renewal date somewhere you will see it.

Get four settings right before you decide it does not work

Most people who try audiobooks once and give up were defeated by a setting. The format was never the problem.

Listen to the narrator before you borrow. Every service has a sample. The narrator is a bigger factor than the book — the wrong voice makes a wonderful book unbearable, and two minutes tells you everything. Do this every single time.

Leave the speed alone at first, then nudge it. Start at normal. After a few hours of listening, most people find ordinary speech has become slightly slow, and a small increase to about 1.2 feels natural rather than rushed. Increase it in small steps, and drop back if you stop absorbing.

Set the sleep timer if you listen in bed. Twenty or thirty minutes. Without it, you fall asleep in chapter three and wake up in chapter nine with no idea where you drifted off.

Find the back-thirty-seconds button now, before you need it. Every app has one. You will use it constantly, and that is normal listening behavior, not a sign that anything is wrong.

Expect to drift, and plan for it

Attention wanders during audiobooks. It wanders during paper books too, but on paper your eyes stop moving and you notice. Audio keeps going without you, which feels worse than it is.

A few things that genuinely help.

• Give your hands something wordless. Washing up, folding laundry, walking, weeding, a familiar drive. Physical routine with no language in it occupies the restless part and leaves the listening intact. What does not work is anything involving words — email, a crossword, a conversation in the next room.

• Start with something forgiving. A memoir, an essay collection, a book you have already read. A novel with twelve characters introduced in the first chapter is the hardest possible place to begin, and people who start there conclude that audiobooks are not for them, when what actually went wrong was the choice of book.

• Keep sessions to twenty or thirty minutes at first. Listening stamina builds the same way reading stamina did, and two hours on day one is how it gets abandoned on day two.

And when you surface and realize you missed five minutes, press the back button and carry on. That is not failure. That is what the button is for.
