Maybe an article on products that enable seniors to carry their phones with them? A fall anywhere in the house could take a long time to resolve if your phone is on the coffee table and you're down the hall.

Great idea, let me research this and see what options are on the market! Thanks!

I have a break-away lanyard for my phone. I don’t recall where I bought it but I think it was at the same place where I got the clips for my mittens.🤔🤣

I wear a water resistant smart watch that links to my phone. I can hit one button on my watch and it calls the emergency numbers that I put in the phone’s contact list. It reports my location automatically.

Some of these watches have a fall sensor that triggers the calls.

Shower curtain rod that won’t fall on someone.

I already have all these elements in place but I still had a fall on the bathroom floor last year and sprained my ankle. Fortunately I always take my phone in the bathroom so I was able to call for help. If you live alone, that’s important.

That’s scary. Glad you were able to call for help, and I hope you are ok now!

Even with everything set up right, accidents can still happen. Bringing your phone in is a smart move—especially if you live alone.

Totally agree with all this. Makes good sense and is great advice.

On a different note we should all be doing some simple balance exercises where possible.

I’m 80 next and I had a close call recently. I did not fall. I stumbled pretty badly but I saved myself.

I put it down to my balance exercises routine.

Where possible I do it most mornings.

The thing is I’m reasonably good at it.

But I want to point out that it started poorly. I just couldn’t stand on one foot for more than a few seconds.

Over time it got better.

Now I can do it for 15 minutes if I need to.

My point is do it.

Start.

You will get better.

Like every thing in life.

The more you do it the better you get.

Love your work.

Thanks so much, Daz — really appreciate this.

And yes, you’re absolutely right about balance exercises. What you shared is such a good reminder: start where you are, keep at it, and it gets better over time.

Good for you for sticking with it and building up like that — 15 minutes is amazing.

Really glad you caught yourself, and thanks again for adding this.

Eek, this is a timely article - I’m 62 this year and I can still stand on one foot, but I’m about to get the bathroom done this year and I should probably future proof it now with the walk in shower and grab rails.

Healthy Seniors (moved)'s avatar

Absolutely — smart move to do it now while you’re planning the remodel. A walk-in shower and grab rails can make a huge difference later, and they’re useful at any age. Love that you’re thinking ahead!

You’re so right actually!! My brother slipped in the bathroom and fractured his skull - and he was in his mid 40s - can happen at any age!
